wyoming-black-bear-huntingWyoming bear hunting is a great choice for hunters looking to bag a world-class black bear. With its high rate of color phase bears and excellent hunting grounds—and especially with this award-winning outfitter at your back—the Greys River area of Wyoming is one of your best bets for a beautiful and awe-inspiring trophy.

The Hunt

You’ll be embarking on a six-day hunt based in an excellent lodge. Each day, you’ll travel out to blinds that have been in place for some time; they are first supplied at the beginning of spring or fall, before the Wyoming bear hunting season picks up, with additional food provided continuously so the bears keep coming back. These are situated in reliable places that have attracted numerous bears in the past. Trail cameras are also kept in place to identify the animals that are visiting the baits; thanks to these, you should have a pretty good idea of how many bears are coming to each bait, what colors they are, and how big they are before you head out on your hunt. This takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.

wyoming-bear-huntingYou’ll hunt from ground blinds high in the mountains, often at heights of 7,000 feet or more. Don’t be intimidated, though—the outfitter offers blinds that are accessible to anyone. Physical fitness will help but certainly isn’t essential. The main advantage these heights provide (other than great hunting!) is an environment that’s favorable to hide preservation, resulting in a low rate of slipped hides, and a low bug population. You won’t be constantly pestered by black flies.

Each day you’ll begin by eating breakfast in the lodge around 8:00 AM. The guides will then head out to check on the baits, and you’ll have most of the day to relax. It’s a good idea to invest in a fishing license: the lodge offers catch-and-release fishing in its private pond, and you are, of course, welcome to fish the Greys River. At 3:00 PM you’ll have an early dinner before heading out to the baits. There, you’ll take position in your blind, keeping a sharp eye out for the bear you’ve been waiting for as sunset approaches. Stay patient and wait for a good shot!
