Plateau Deer Hunting in Aguascalientes MexicoIn October of 2012, Safari Club International, with help from the Monterrey Chapter of Safari Club International and many SCI Members, recognized four new Mexican subspecies of whitetail deer from the eleven subspecies currently residing in Mexico. These four subspecies are all eligible for entry into the SCI Record Books.

  •  Mexican Central Plateau whitetail deer
  •  Mexican Texanus whitetail deer
  •  Mexican Gulf Coast whitetail deer
  •  Mexican Pacific Coast whitetail deer

The Central Plateau Mexican whitetail deer hunt offered by Global Sporting Safaris is conducted in the Sierra Madre Mountains in the region of the Sierra Fria (Cold Mountain) range, just a little over a 60-minute drive from the Aguascalientes airport. The hunts take place at 7,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level amongst the pine- and oak-covered canyons and high plateaus. The predominant deer subspecies at this location is the highland Mexican whitetail deer aka Central Plateau white-tailed deer.

Central Plateau Deer Hunting in Aguascalientes MexicoHunting will take place in natural blinds and tree stands over established feeders or via the spot-and-stalk method. These two types of hunting are ideal for both the bow hunter and the rifle hunter. The Sierra Fria range of the Sierra Madre Mountains is also home to thousands of Goulds turkeys that will also frequent the feeders, but unfortunately their seasons don’t coincide.

Global Sporting Safaris’ recommended caliber for Plateau deer hunts are .243 through .270. Due to the smaller size of these deer, anything over .30 caliber may be overkill. Shot ranges should be from 75 yards over feeders to 150 yards on spot and stalk.

The season runs from December through the first two weeks of February with the rut taking place in the month of January.

Plateau Deer Hunt in Aguascalientes MexicoThere are only nine Plateau whitetail deer recorded in the SCI Record Books as of the uploading of this webpage; their recorded measurements are as follows: The Plateau whitetail deer will usually be 3×3, 3×4 or 4×4 with main beams ranging from 11 7/8” to 19 3/8”. Inside span will range from 11 1/8” to 15 1/8”. T1 range from 6/8” through 3 3/8”, T2 from 6 2/8” through 6 4/8”, T3 from 1 2/8” through 6 6/8” and T4 from zero to 7 5/8”.

The Central Plateau Mexican whitetail deer category groups whitetail deer of the following subspecies: Miquihuan and highland Mexican Whitetail deer which are deer with size, body weight and antler scores smaller than the Mexican Texanus whitetail deer, but bigger in size, body weight and antler scores than the smaller Mexican Gulf Coast whitetail deer and Mexican Pacific Coast whitetail deer. It should also be noted that of the two Mexican whitetail subspecies that comprise the Central Plateau whitetail deer, the Miquihuan whitetail is larger in body size and score than the highland Mexican whitetail deer.
