New Mexico Mountain Lion Hunts

Mountain Lion Hunts New MexicoThis outfitter offers guided mountain lion hunts with top-notch hounds backed up by experienced houndsmen. They have more than 10 years of experience and will give you the best possible odds of a successful hunt.

New Mexico no longer has a closed season on mountain lion—you can go after them whenever you please, so long as you have a license. However, we recommend hunting between December and February because the snow makes finding tracks much easier.

This outfitter prefers to schedule hunts on an on-call basis to ensure that the weather cooperates. If that doesn’t work, they can reserve dates for you instead.

This is one our favorite hunts because the scenery looks so pure with the landscape covered in white. It is a bit physically demanding—be prepared for walking in snow and rough terrain.

The hunt lasts five days and is based out of Espanola NM. When you and your guides get to your destination in the forest, you will start driving around in the fresh snow looking for a lion trail. When you do find tracks, the adrenaline starts pumping and the guides get the dogs ready to start tracking the elusive cat.

New Mexico Mountain Lion

Mountain Lion Hunting In New MexicoThis 5-day hunt is fully guided. The outfitter provides food and beverages in the field. Last season, they had a success rate of about 95%.

After a fresh snow, the hunt begins by going out in multiple trucks very early in the morning hours and cutting forest roads for a fresh lion track until one is found. Once one of your guides discovers a fresh trail, he sits on it until it’s time to release the hounds.

The guides get the dogs ready by getting them out of the dog box and putting on the GPS collars. The dogs immediately know something is about to happen.

They get two or three dogs lined up and put them on the track. They immediately start to smell the trail; once the guides release them, the chase is on.

New Mexico Mountain LionUsually, the outfitters will start the track off with just a couple of dogs. That way, there are fewer prints, making it easier to follow the cat’s trail. Depending on how fresh the track is, though, they may let more dogs go after it.

GPS tracking on the dogs keeps the guides in communication with them throughout the chase. Once they see “treed” on the GPS, the walking starts—though you can sometimes take a vehicle to get closer to the tree. Sometimes the walk is only a hundred yards long, but other times it’s more than a mile.

This is where it kind of gets a little tricky. These hunts are demanding from the start to the finish, but every hunt is different. One will be a breeze and another will be the hardest hunt of your life. You never know what to expect.

The outfitters also have a local taxidermist who does a good number of cats every year and they look beautiful.

New Mexico Mountain Lion Hunting Outfitters

New Mexico Mountain Lion OutfittersThe hunts take place in northern New Mexico. The landscape consists of mesas, rocky terrain and occasional steep canyons with pinion trees and pines. Usually the dogs will chase the lion up a tree, but sometimes the cat ledges up on the rocks or goes into a cave.

During this hunt, you will see herds of elk and some mule deer in the rut, so make sure you have the camera handy throughout the whole hunt. These mountain lion hunts are very scenic in the winter, so this is a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

We recommend the following local hotels: Santa Claran Resort and Casino (866-244-7625), Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino (866-257-5990), and Ohkay Hotel and Casino (877-747-1668).
