Northern Pike Fishing

Pike FishingGiant water bodies grow giant fish. Come experience arguably the best trophy Northern Pike fishery on earth in the spectacular Northwest Territories, Canada! Great Slave Lake ranks as one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes and headwaters to the mighty Mackenzie River. Two thirds of Great Slave is shallow however with an endless labyrinth of islands, reefs weedy flats & bays, rocky shorelines and creek mouths. The result is more perfect trophy pike habitat than anyone could ever dream to fish in a lifetime. In fact, 99% of our clients leave having boated a 40+ inch Northern, and this monster pike factory routinely produces fish over 50+ inches. Couple this with all-inclusive fly-in air charter service, delicious home cooked meals and luxurious accommodations, a top notch fleet, guides & equipment to the only lodge in the entire 100km long North Arm of the lake – and you have the making of a world class Canadian fishing destination that will be both exhilarating and exhausting after numerous battles with these hungry predators.  Peak season runs from late May to mid July each year and is in high demand. Choose from 3, 5 and 7-day all-inclusive fishing packages direct from Yellowknife, NWT, Canada, hosted by our outfitters of more than 20 years’ experience.

Pike Fishing, A Typical Day

Northern Pike FishingBegin the day with a hearty breakfast, then assemble your fishing gear and meet your guide down by the docks. Board one of the lodges new 18-foot radio-equipped Jon boats with 40 HP motors and find yourself in a prime fishing location within a matter of minutes. Begin tangling with 40-50+ inch Northern Pike in this fertile, endless mosaic of prime habitat. Often several vicious strikes ensue before the actual hook-up, and battle begins! Even the smaller fish are savage and healthy, testing both your skill and equipment all the way to the gunnels. Things start getting really exciting & memorable however once you begin landing 4+ foot Northern Pike!  To maintain such a healthy trophy fishery, we promote a catch & release as well as mandatory single barbless hook policies. Various large spoon lures, soft plastics, spinner and buzz baits, or top-water lures such as a Moss Boss are all popular and productive choices. The lodge’s roster of knowledgeable and experienced guides fast forward success and become some of the highlights of the trip. This is particularly true around midday when it’s time to break for a mouthwatering Canadian style shore lunch prepared from either the days pike or occasionally Walleye. Inconnu, Cony, or “She fish” is another species that may be seasonally available resembling an oversized Whitefish which makes for a unique experience and photo opportunity. Continue fishing these expansive shallow waters for trophy Pike into the afternoon until your shoulders give out or it’s time for dinner – whichever comes first. A short ride later and you back at the lodge in time to share fishing stories with other liars at the lodge over a cocktail before a catered gourmet dinner. Repeat it all with your best fishing partner the following day, and again the next.

NWT Pike FishingPike Fishing Settings & Conditions; The region is ruggedly beautiful, looking much the way it did thousands of years ago. Sprawling Canadian Shield bedrock extends in all directions, stunting the spruce trees as they approach the endless barren lands further to the northeast. The lodge is nestled in a maze of islands and narrows on Great Slave Lakes nearly 100km long North Arm, and expect to be fishing within minutes of stepping off the plane. Round the clock sunlight is typical during the bulk of the fishing season, and the area is home to countless bald eagles and nesting waterfowl. Ensure you bring you camera as Black Bear, Moose, Lynx, Wolf and occasionally even Wood Bison are spotted while fishing!

Conditions are generally pleasant (around 50-70 F) and will vary between early spring Vs mid-late summer. The chance of rain, high wind, and hot, cold or stormy weather is always present so pack accordingly. It is recommended to bring various base layers, topped with a waterproof shell. Gortex gear is popular and stands up to rain, wind and pike slime!
