A unique thing about this fully guided fishing trip is the fact that many fishing photos will have the main lodge in the background. It’s true. You don’t need to go far to find the big one since some of the best fishing of the season occurs within view of camp. It’s a unique and fabled location where huge concentrations of mature lake trout spawn each fall shortly after the fishing season has ended and the lodge closes for the winter. Until that time however, the fishing steadily heats up over the course of the summer and becomes more and more incredible. A standard Lake trout weighs in at 10-20 pounds, and 30 and 40 pound fish are caught daily, bragged about over shore-lunch or at the end of the day during cocktail hour. This is the perfect place to learn or refine your lake trout fishing, as nearly every approach puts fish in the boat. Early season its best to troll sandbars in shallower water with spoons, then as things warm up so does the bite, and a jig tipped with sucker meat will keep you entertained all day. If you rather sight cast the crystal clear waters along rocky shorelines or reefs, just ask. Trout are typically fished from 20-80 feet of water, and new, high quality fishing tackle is provided or available at the lodge. You are of course welcome to bring any of your own equipment. Warm weedy river mouths to the main lake offers excellent Pike fishing for true northern giants, and literally every stretch of shoreline seems to produce a feisty Arctic Grayling. In fact, directly in front of the main lodge in the rip-currents is likely Great Slave Lakes best trophy grayling hotspot, with fish over 21 inches caught causally from shore after dinner or before bed. Don’t miss out, so bring a small spinning or fly rod for after hour’s action. Fly out’s to nearby lakes questing for trophy Pike and Walleye at the northern extent of their ranges can also be arranged.
Shore lunches here are spectacular and a huge list of made-to-order menu items is available for you to taste and enjoy each day. Every conceivable way to prepare fresh lake trout is available, all forms of fried, baked, grilled, smoked, blackened, raw (Ceviche/Sushi) or poached, along with vegetables, fruits, cold drinks or specialty items. Not a fan of fish? Ask us to prepare delicious grilled steaks, chicken breasts, burgers, Sausages or prawns over an open fire on a remote island of the sub-arctic’s Great Slave Lake while you relax after an a morning of fishing! Move at your speed to get back out on the water or enjoy some hiking, rock climbing, berry picking or a nap!
Outside of a few blustery days fishing conditions and temperatures are generally mild and quite tolerable. Be certain to never leave camp without good raingear, but systems tend to blow over quickly and can at times be dodged by your guide. Temperatures are coldest during spring fishing in the early part of the season. Summer mornings can be chilly but generally warm up throughout the course of the day. Mosquitoes and black flies are present while on shore, and bug spray is recommended, but your cabins have full screen porches and receive a pleasant breeze from the lake. Insects are not an issue while fishing and windblown islands are usually favored for shore lunch sites to eliminate biting insects.
The east arm of Great Slave Lake is bordered by towering cliffs and ancient boreal forests. Dawn and dusk offers gorgeous lighting and enjoy viewing the northern lights when the conditions are right. Great Slave Lake offers endless fishing opportunities, and the clear, northern, aqua blue water needs to be experienced firsthand. It feels like a sea yet with visibility to 30 feet which makes wrestling a giant lake trout from the depths all the more exciting. Sandbars, humps, jagged rocky shorelines and deep water breaks make up some of the typical fishing locations. The cliffs are truly a sight to behold, a geologic wonder to gaze upon during boat rides, studying the various layers of rocks and giant spire formations – they also help block the wind and provide superb boating conditions. Wildlife viewing is also spectacular. Huge bull moose up to 60 inches wide are viewed routinely, as well as black bears, and birds like Bald Eagles, Arctic Loons and Surf Scoters. The landing strip near camp is also home to a resident pack of wolves, which can be viewed raising their young over the course of the summer. Certainly consider bringing your camera, and perhaps binoculars. Some optics are available at the main lodge for wildlife viewing.
For its remote setting and full amenities, this is a truly a 5-star fishing experience in the sub-arctic. WiFi internet is available throughout most of camp. Your personal cabin has a complete bathroom, lounge and sleeping quarters, as well as a screened-in, bug proof porch at the water’s edge overlooking the “Narrows”, with trophy Arctic grayling and Lake trout up to 15 pounds swim a mere cast away. Expect daily laundry & maid service, 3 fantastic, chef inspired meals daily and fully guided fishing in every respect. The main lodge offers a fine dining room, bar, games area, library and sitting area with a excellent view. This is a great place to exchange fishing stories in the evenings and recoup for another exciting day ahead with fellow anglers from around the world. A sauna and swimming dock are available as well. Nearby is the Tackle Shop were lures, strategies, and fish stories are readily traded over local maps and a cold one.
Able to accommodate as many as 44 guests and with a conference room and a private landing strip onsite, this is the perfect corporate or large party adventure destination. Be sure to ask your GSS consultant for special pricing or considerations for group organizers.
Despite being a remote, sub-arctic getaway destination, any hassle of getting there is virtually non-existent, but rather only part of the adventure. The typical route is through the northern town of Yellowknife, steeped in its own rich history with much to see and do. You will be greeted at the Yellowknife Airport by a porter from the lodge, an once everyone and all your bags are together you are brought to either the sea or bush plane base, or a hotel for the night. From Yellowknife it is only a 20 minute flight to the lodge where you are met at the landing strip by the outfitter and the guides. Within moments you are shuttled to the lodge, your bags are carried to your private cabins and your fishing licenses are filled out. You meet your guide, discuss tackle, techniques and before you know you are tangling with one of the monster lake trout yourself!
For large parties or corporate groups however, arrangement for chartered or personal aircraft can be made to fly from any location in North America, or elsewhere, landing DIRECTLY at the lodge’s $10 million dollar runway, avoiding transfers in Yellowknife or customs during the process. This is a very unique feature for any fishing camp, which also maintains a seaplane base for any float based aircraft.
