The Terrain

This outfitter offers tens of thousands of acres of private land in South Dakota’s West River region, dominated by fields and creek bottoms that are full of turkeys. Some hunts will take place in the Black Hills. The outfitter also offers eastern wild turkey hunting in Iowa.

Be prepared for a wide range of temperatures; days can range from as high as 70 to as low as 40 degrees, with some nights sinking below freezing.

The Hunt

It isn’t uncommon to spot more than two dozen gobblers in a single hunting day out here. Whether you’re young or old, a first-time hunter or a forty-year veteran, this outfitter will be able to provide you with the exciting and memorable Merriam turkey hunting experience you’re looking for.

Turkey decoys and Double Bull blinds will be provided for your hunt.

Tags and Applications

Hunting options include:

Merriam Prairie Spring Turkey – Two guaranteed state lottery gobbler tags
Black Hills Turkey – One guaranteed state lottery gobbler tag

The outfitter will assist you with the application process upon request, whether you’re applying for firearm or archery hunting. Shotgun tags are available through a draw and are nearly guaranteed. Archery tags are unlimited and completely guaranteed.

Tag drawings are held from February–April, and, some years, during May as well.

The Quarry

Merriam turkeys in South Dakota usually weigh between 16 and 22 pounds; beards are generally eight inches long or longer, and spurs range from three-quarters of an inch to one and three-quarter inches.

South Dakota Hunting Lodge

The Lodge

This outfitter maintains a very comfortable lodge with room for up to half a dozen adult lodgers. There are two full-sized beds that are convenient for couples. There are also two full baths, including showers/tubs. The deck and large windows provide an excellent view, and the home-style atmosphere and cooking will help you relax at the end of every hunting day.

Telephone access is provided (though you’ll need a calling card—these are available for purchase at the lodge), as well as satellite TV, a VCR/DVD player, and wireless Internet.

Food and Drink

Alcohol is allowed at the lodge, but none is provided—in other words, BYOB. You’ll have access to a refrigerator to keep everything cool, as well as a microwave for any extra food you decided to bring along. Meals and snacks will be provided: make your own breakfast from the variety of foods in the lodge; enjoy simple lunches of sandwiches, beverages and chips that are provided for you in the field, with snacks to tide you over between meals; and, at the end of the day, sit down to a real homemade dinner and dessert.
