About Lake Huites Lodge
Lake
Huites Lodge has quickly gained a reputation as a world-class trophy
largemouth bass Mecca. Anglers from around the world have flocked
to Lake Huites to hunt for mammoth largemouths, relax in elegant
accommodations, and enjoy the fine cuisine and hospitality of Lake
Huites Lodge.
For more than two decades, Mexico has been a popular
destination for American bass anglers in search of schools of trophy
largemouth bass. Unfortunately, many of the once fabled Mexican
bass impoundments no longer live up to their legendary reputations
- their fisheries having declined as a result of over-harvesting
of the - once plentiful - resource and drought conditions that
resulted in poor water quality and a decline of baitfish species
and bass populations.
In
the last four years, however, one lake has emerged that is helping
to restore the mystique of Mexican bass fishing once again. The
hottest bass lake in the world might be Lake Huites, located on
Mexico's West Coast, outside the city of Los Mochis. When at full
pool, Huites is a 30,000-acre man-made reservoir that had been
initially stocked with Florida strain largemouth bass fingerlings
to jump start the fishery. And these bass have taken a liking to
the mountainous climate, long growing season and an abundant, protein-rich
diet of tilapia and shad and are growing at a rapid rate. When
conditions are right, skilled anglers are catching in excess of
75 bass a day and 10 pound plus trophies are being caught with
great regularity. The local guides have an intimate knowledge of
this deep, clear lake and will take you to prime structures that
concentrate Huites fantastic bass population.
Lake
Huites Lodge is capably managed by Mexico bass fishing expert Rene
Salazar. Rene is a second generation fishing guide, whose job is
to instruct the entire staff of Lake Huites Lodge on the best way
to offer their American clients a fantastic fishing adventure and
hassle free experience in Mexico. You'll stay in grand comfort
at Lake Huites Lodge, considered to be the lodge by which all the
lakes other lodges are judged in terms of comfort, cleanliness
and quality of the cuisine. You'll be pampered by the entire staff,
ranging from the excellent cooks who will prepare both American
and Mexican cuisine, to the housekeeping crew that will tidy your
room each day, as well as the staff that will wash and iron your
clothes each day so you don't have to be burdened by overpacking.
There's even a tackle shop just in case you left that "hot" lure
at home.
Whether your interested in a three day fishing package with your
best fishing buddy, or a corporate retreat for 20 coworkers for
a week, Lake Huites Lodge is the ideal choice for your next Mexico
bass angling adventure.

Season
September through June. Although the lake offers excellent fishing
on a year-round basis, weve discovered that the months outside
the prime fishing window of September through June are often extremely
hot or rainy.
Capacity
20 anglers. Lake Huites Lodge would be the ideal destination
for a corporate fishing outing, club tournament or large family
fishing getaway.
Travel Logistics*
The
majority of the anglers travel to Tucson, Arizona and then take
the AeroCalifornia flight to Los Mochis, Mexico. Upon arrival in
Los Mochis, anglers will then be greeted and transported the 3-1/2
hour ride to the lodge. The last hour is on an unpaved road. The
fishing is productive because this lodge is so inaccessible and
this has a tendency to keep commercial anglers off the lake and
discourages flocks of visiting anglers from the states to tow their
own boats to the lake. Our in-house travel agency can assist you
with your travel needs to Los Mochis.
*For those that would prefer a more direct route to the
lodge, we can arrange private air charters upon request from
several U.S. cities. These flights arrive in the small town
of El Fuerte, only an hours drive or so from Lake Huites Lodge.
Please inquire for more information.
Predominant Language
Spanish is the national language of Mexico. Some of the guides
do speak a few words of English. There is typically no problems
in communicating with the guides, as they understand fishing and
many phrases that are revolved around fishing. It is always wise,
when undertaking a trip of this nature, to learn a few simple Spanish
phrases and words. There will always bean English speaking host
or manager on the premises.
Special Requirements to enter Mexico
U.S. residents will need a valid passport to enter the Mexico
or a certified (raised seal) copy of your birth certificate accompanied
by a valid driver's license. When one parent accompanies a child
less than 18 years of age, a notarized letter from the other parent
attesting that they have given permission to the traveling parent
to take the child to Mexico must accompany the child on the trip
to Mexico.
Accommodations
Two
anglers will share a room complete with air conditioner, private
bathroom and filtered water. The beds offer first quality US made
mattresses. The rooms overlook the lake. Maid service is provided
daily.
Meals
The cooking staff will provide a delightful array of dishes for
visiting anglers, including steaks, fish and an elaborate Mexican
dinner. Freshly made chips and salsa, along with frosty cold margaritas,
are always on hand to hold you over until dinner is served.
Fishing
While
it is true that the most experienced anglers return each day with
reports of phenomenal catches, even novice anglers quickly learn
the ways of Huites' bass and land them in numbers that they could
never attain in the US. Typically, the early morning hours offer
fantastic topwater action. Historically, the best baits have been
Pop-Rs, Zara Spooks, Gilmore Jumpers and buzzbaits. This
is dependent on the moon phase, water level and water clarity,
however, as well as time of the year. As the sun rises overhead,
switch to a deeper approach using spinnerbaits, worms and crankbaits.
For some reason, Huites largemouths, especially lunker-sized
ones, are attracted to the large sized Bill Dance Fat Free Shad
crankbait. Cast these crankbaits to points, canyon walls, humps
and submerged brush as you prospect for the large schools which
are commonplace on Huites. Find the right structure and you might
land 30 fish in 35 casts, averaging in excess of three pounds.
For real trophy bass action, look towards deep water for the lunker
of your dreams using these big crankbaits and large worms.
This
lake is an undiscovered fly angler's paradise. Flip Pallot recently
filmed his popular Walkers Cay Chronicles ESPN series from
Huites and called the shoot the greatest fly fishing action
for bass that hes ever encountered. Popping flies worked
around shallow cover take a tremendous amount of fish. When the
surface action slows, switch to Deceivers and Clouser Minnows and
target fish in the three to six foot depth range with weight forward
floating and sinking tip lines. You may want to also consider a
full sinking line when targeting trophy fish on deep structure
like points and humps.
Two anglers share the boat with an experienced guide. Although
they speak little, if any English, they do know prime areas to
fish and are eager for you to have the fishing trip of a lifetime.
The boats are roomy and offer swivel seats, trolling motors and
outboards.
Activities for the Non-Angler
Lake Huites Lodge is first and foremost a fishing lodge. Because
it is so remote, there are not many activities that would make
it appealing for the non-angler.
Packing
Upon receipt of deposits, you will be sent a detailed packing
list and other literature.
Weather
The weather is dependent upon the season you visit Huites. The
evening and morning hours are cool because of the cool crisp mountain
air of the Sierra Madre Mountains. A jacket is a necessity during
these times. As the day progresses, it typically heats up to between
70 and 90 degrees (depending on what month you visit the lake).
Occasional showers do occur, so a rain-suit is a must.
