Wyoming is a state in the Western United States. The majority of the state is dominated by the mountain ranges and rangelands of the Rocky Mountain West, while the easternmost section of the state includes part of a high elevation prairie region known as the High Plains. While the tenth largest U.S. state by area, Wyoming is the least populous, with a U.S. Census estimated population of 544,270 in 2009. This is a 5.9% increase since 2000. The capital and the most populous city of Wyoming is Cheyenne.
The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of mountain ranges. Surface elevations range from the summit of Gannett Peak in the Wind River Mountain Range, at 13,804 feet, to the Belle Fourche River valley in the state’s northeast corner, at 3,125 feet. In the northwest are the Absaroka, Owl Creek, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horn Mountains; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern region the Laramie, Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges.
The Snowy Range in the south central part of the state is an extension of the Colorado Rockies in both geology and appearance. The Wind River Range in the west central part of the state is remote and includes more than 40 mountain peaks in excess of 13,000 ft tall in addition to Gannett Peak, the highest peak in the state. The Big Horn Mountains in the north central portion are somewhat isolated from the bulk of the Rocky Mountains.
The Teton Range in the northwest extends for 50 miles, part of which is included in Grand Teton National Park. The park includes the Grand Teton, the second highest peak in Wyoming.
The Continental Divide spans north-south across the central portion of the state. Rivers east of the divide drain into the Missouri River Basin and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. They are the North Platte, Wind, Big Horn and the Yellowstone rivers. The Snake River in northwest Wyoming eventually drains into the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, as does the Green River through the Colorado River Basin.
The continental divide forks in the south central part of the state in an area known as the Great Divide Basin where the waters that flow or precipitate into this area remain there and cannot flow to any ocean. Instead, because of the overall aridity of Wyoming, water in the Great Divide Basin simply sinks into the soil or evaporates.
Several rivers begin or flow through the state, including the Yellowstone River, Bighorn River, Green River, and the Snake River.
More than 48% of the land in Wyoming is owned by the U.S. Government, leading Wyoming to rank sixth in the US in total acres and fifth in percentage of a state's land owned by the Federal government. This amounts to about 30,099,430 acres owned and managed by the U.S. Government. The state government owns an additional 6% of all Wyoming lands, or another 3,864,800 acres.
The vast majority of this government land is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service in numerous National Forests, a National Grassland, and a number of vast swaths of public land, in addition to the F.E. Warren Air Force Base near Cheyenne.

There you can hunt a resident herd of over 1000 elk that stay all winter on the Forest Park Feed Ground. Moose Hunting
This Wyoming outfitter offers Shiras Moose hunting in the famous Greys River area in western Wyoming. The Greys River hunting area is outside of the wolf recovery area so they have not had any impact on hunting. The Greys River contains outstanding hunting for moose, elk and black bears as well as excellent mule deer hunting. The terrain is rugged and although most of the hunts are from horseback. Moose and black bears can be hunted using a vehicle if needed. You will stay at the Box Y Lodge, with its cozy cabins complete with private baths. The Box Y is the only lodge on the Greys River, where a home cooked meal, hot shower and a warm bed awaits you after a long day in the saddle.
Bear Hunting
Wyoming's premier Inland Black bear area is the Greys River country. This area produces mainly color phase Black bears and some big bears with large heads. Black Bears from the Greys River area have had more than a few Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Big Game Trophies awarded to them and their hunter.
This outfitter hunts bears over baits using ground blinds and you won't fight black flies like similar hunts in Canada. The baits are tried and true having produced many Black Bears over the years. They are placed in early spring and then constantly re-supplied to keep the Bears interest. With the use of trail cameras we can monitor the baits and help determine the size, color and number of Bears coming to the bait. You will be hunting at 7,000ft to 8,000ft, in mountainous terrain, these conditions help prevent Greys River Bears from having slipped hides.
These 6-day bear hunts are based out of the scenic and very comfortable Box Y Lodge, the only lodge on the Greys River. The Box Y Lodge consists of a main lodge with dining room where excellent meals are served and a comfortable living room for reading, relaxing or telling stories. The sleeping accommodations consist of cozy cabins with full baths.
The day starts with breakfast at about 8:00am; afterwards your guides will head out and check baits. You are free to fish at the Box Y's private catch and release pond, on the Greys River or just take a drive. The main meal will be served around 3:00 pm and then head out to the baits and get ready for your trophy black bear to arrive. We have baits that can accommodate anyone’s physical ability.

Quality hunting demands the best rifles and hunting gear and equipment. Make sure to maximize your enjoyment of your Wyoming or Montana hunting experience by bringing the best rifle and hunting equipment along with you.
Neither Wyoming nor Montana has restrictive laws concerning firearms which may be legally possessed under the laws of your home state. Hunting rifles and other firearms may be carried uncased in vehicles although safety considerations dictate that all firearms in a vehicle should be unloaded with action open.
Legal firearms and rifles for big game or trophy game must have a barrel bore diameter of at least 0.23 inches and be chambered to fire a center fire cartridge not less than two inches overall length including a soft or expanding point bullet seated to a normal depth or any other cartridge authorized by the Commission that has a barrel bore diameter of at least 0.40 inches and a charge of at least 50 grains of black powder or equivalent.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission Regulations (Chapter XXXII) approved the following cartridges for the taking of all big game or trophy game animals:
Legal Archery Equipment
When Antelope and Deer hunting, the longbow hunter must be equipped with a bow of not less than 40 pounds draw weight or possessing the ability to cast a hunting arrow of 400 grain weight at least 160 yards. When hunting Elk, the bow hunter must be equipped with the longbow of not less than 50 pounds draw weight or possessing the ability to cast a hunting arrow of 500 grain weight at least 160 yards. The crossbow hunter must be equipped with a crossbow of not less than 90 pounds draw weight which has a minimum draw length of 14 inches (from front of bow to back of string in the cocked position), a positive safety mechanism, and which must be cocked by hand without the aid of leverage gaining devices. Cross bow bolts must be at least 16 inches long. The broadhead of arrows or bolts shall be of sharp steel with a minimum cutting width of one inch.
Below are our recommendations for a typical 5-day Wyoming hunting trip. On more lengthy hunts, add a change of clothing for additional comfort. Special attention should be paid to outerwear. These should be a noiseless as possible so please leave clothing made with nylon material at home. Weather is unpredictable and can range from snow and 0 degrees F up to 70 degrees F, so best to be prepared for anything. Please confine personal items to two medium-sized duffel bags and one gun case. This is especially important on wilderness camp hunts.
The weather can and will have a profound impact on your hunting experience. Please be aware that the outfitter has no control over it! No extra days will be awarded or refunds given due to lost hunting time or season closures caused by Acts of GOD. Any additional costs for motels, meals etc. caused by adverse weather conditions are not the responsibility of the outfitter. You may want to consider trip cancellation insurance.
Wyoming and Montana’s diverse terrain provides scenic beauty but can test one’s physical abilities. Horses and 4x4 vehicles are used to cover the country, but walking is involved on all hunts. The hunter who has prepared him or herself physically has the edge on scoring a trophy. To make your evenings a time to relax and enjoy your vacation, rather than nursing sore muscles, we suggest you prepare yourself physically for your hunting experience. An exercise program initiated before your hunt will help you considerable while you are on your hunt. Horse hunters (Hunts 3 & 7) are advised to go riding at least twice shortly before the beginning of your hunting trip and deer hunters on Hunt #7 are advised especially to undertake a conditioning program well ahead of your hunt.
