Mexico Deer Hunting

Mexico Deer Hunting in the State of Coahuila

Two hours west of Del Rio, TX, into Mexico, in the northern State of Coahuila (pronounced koh-ah-WEE-lah), nestled in the heart of the mystic badlands of the “Sierra del Burro” Mountain Range, lies This hunting Ranch. Set amidst a traditional 60’s Mexican Ranch style, it sets the mood of an era of traditional Mexican hunting mixed in with a few modern and basic amenities.

This Ranch is one of the few remaining “Big” Ranches in northern Old Mexico, spanning just less than 70,000 acres of prime desert hunting land. It is a 4th generation, family owned operation that has been in the same family legacy for 75+ years. Formerly a cattle Ranch, it is now primarily a hunting operation. The Ranch is registered with U.M.A. (Wildlife Management Unit) number: DGVS - CR - EX1489 – COA in Mexico. The owner and outfitter, Alberto, is a registered and licensed Outfitter in Mexico holding Outfitter License #196 in his State. He is also SCI Official Measurer #9073321.

Ranch hunts are traditionally Mexican and old school, from spotting and stalking the rolling hills and deep canyons safari style looking for trophy deer, to cowboys on horseback driving and flushing lightning fast blue quail coveys towards your group of hunting partners.

When you hunt at this Ranch you will be living a genuine Mexican hunting adventure, where you never know if you are going to spot your “muy grande” Mexico Deer Hunting trophy of a lifetime over the next ridge.

Hunting Overview

One of the distinguishing characteristics that make the Ranch a very unique Mexico hunting destination is the fact, that it is the just about the only Ranch in Coahuila where you can hunt 3 different deer: The Carmen Mountain Deer, the Crooki desert Mule Deer and the Texano whitetail deer. These hunts will take place mainly on the Ranch range and at times on adjacent private properties that we lease.

Our deer hunts are usually conducted safari style on a high rack rig, then, when game is spotted we will go in for the final stalk. We also use tripods or brush blinds around known deer movement areas and near water holes.

When hunting Texano Whitetail deer you will usually see 8 – 12 bucks on a good day and trophy buck will generally sport 9 – 12 point racks with 17” to 23” inside spreads. There is a good population of 140”+ class deer and it is not uncommon to spot the occasional 160”+ buck! Nevertheless, there is always a fortuitous chance to run into that “Muy Grande” 170”class deer. Keep in mind these are low fence, free ranging, fair chase deer, so this fact alone makes taking one of these trophy deer that much more meaningful!

Carmen Mountain Whitetail deer are in a class all by their own, being endemic to the Big Bend National Park, Sierra del Carmen Mountains and surrounding Mountain Ranges. These smaller elusive whitetail subspecies sport racks in the 90” – 130” range and are known locally as the “ghost of the desert” for their small size and coat color that blends perfectly and naturally into the desert and canyon background where they range, making them a true challenge to hunt, even though you will be seeing about 5 – 8 bucks a day.

Crooki Desert Mule deer are “The King of the desert”, being the largest and most magnificent deer species in Coahuila. These trophy mule deer carry racks that can have 20 – 30+ inside spreads and have 3 to 5 points per side. Mature desert mule deer will also have very good mass on their antlers. Our Crooki Mule deer population is not abundant, as one can only come to expect from such a barren ecosystem, but, on a good day you can expect to see anywhere from 3 – 5 mature bucks and the ones you see will be good ones.

In addition to hunting these trophy deer you can also hunt: Scaled (blue) quail, dove, Javelina (collared peccary), predators (coyote, bobcat, mountain lion) and varmints (raccoon, cottontail and jack rabbit).

We also hunt for quail and dove safari style. Once game is spotted we jump out of the rig and the pursuit is on. Outriders on horseback will assist in flushing quail towards the hunters. Expect fast shooting action when the birds take to the air unexpectedly and every which way! Bird boys and/or Outriders will aide in picking up downed birds to grill back at camp or take all the way back home.

Collared peccaries and varmints are hunted in the same fashion as deer, where as for predator hunts we will set up in a manner that permits us to use predator calls.

Guides are provided and are usually 2 x 1, but, depending on availability we can accommodate 1 x 1. Guides will assist or execute, among other activities: spotting, tracking and recovering game; quarter, cape and package your trophies; help carry your hunting equipment; watch over your safety and your equipment.

Weapons/Calibers Recommended

The minimum recommended caliber for deer hunts is at least a .270. It is recommended that hunters practice medium to long shots before their hunt, as it is not uncommon to have to make shots from 200 – 350 yards.

For Javelina, predator and varmint hunts any .25+ caliber will work good.

For dove and quail hunts we recommend .12, .16 or .20 gauge shotguns.

Bows and crossbows are welcome, but we need to know as much in advance as possible if they are to be used in order to set up or move ground / brush / pop-up blinds to the areas where game are being spotted more often and have no vehicle pressure.

Clothing/Equipment Considerations

CLOTHING SUGGESTIONS

  • In regards to clothing we recommend various layers, as weather can vary drastically from morning to noon to evening. At the very least you should bring a light to medium Jacket and a heavy jacket. Camo clothing patterns are encouraged.

  • Also, a good pair of broken-in hunting boots is vital. Do not bring new hunting boots on this hunt! Some terrain is very rocky and will hurt your feet if you bring new boots!

  • There is extremely thorny and spiny low brush out here, so it is recommended that if you don’t bring brush-proof pants, a pair of cordura chaps or leggings will make a huge difference in comfort on a game stalk.

  • Wind proof clothing, a good pair of gloves, a neck gaiter and a facemask are essential for riding in the high rack hunting rig. Even if we are riding slowly and it isn’t that cold, when riding in the hunting rig the wind chill factor rises considerably.

  • Although it doesn’t rain very often at our location, one of the harshest conditions to hunt in is being cold AND wet, so, if your hunting clothes aren’t water-proof, you should at least bring a portable rain poncho or suit.

HUNTING EQUIPMENT SUGGESTTIONS

At the very least you will need the following for hunting:

  • A good pair of binoculars, at least 8 x 42 mm,
  • A pocket knife or utility tool,
  • A small flashlight,
  • A small – medium size pack for your hunting essentials,
  • Ammo, at least 2 boxes for rifle and at least 2 dz. count for arrows.
  • A sling on your rifle, crossbow or bow.
  • A hard case for your rifle, crossbow or bow.

PERSONAL ITEMS

We recommend, at minimum, the following list of personal items to bring o your hunt:

  • Passport,
  • Photo ID,
  • Toothbrush,
  • Toothpaste,
  • Shampoo,
  • Towels,
  • Deodorant / antiperspirant,
  • Prescription Medications,
  • Camera,
  • Batteries,
  • Camp shoes.

Climatic Considerations

The normal monthly temperatures for our location are listed by month in the following chart:

JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC
63/40 68/44 76/52 83/59 89/67 94/72 96/74 96/74 91/69 82/61 71/49 63/41

Keep in mind these are normal and average temperatures, but you still need to prepare for unpredictable changes in the weather. Sometimes in winter, especially in late January and early February it is common for low temperatures to reach the mid 20’s. Also, sometimes even in late September high temperatures may reach triple digits.

Winters are cold and dry and summers are hot and dry too. Our average annual rainfall is around 20 inches. Spring and fall have very mild and comfortably cool temperatures. The rainy season is usually in early April and late October.

Health Level Required

The hunt difficulty is low to medium and health level required is low to medium too; as long as we can get a hunter onto the hunting rig we are good.

Only if an animal is wounded would we have to do a bit of hiking. If the hiking gets to be too strenuous we can always let the hunter set the pace and rest along the way. Additionally, we always try to take the hunting rig as close as possible to the game to be stalked, hunted, tracked or recovered.

Special Considerations

RESTRICTIONS on hunts:

  • Once a hunting package is defined and purchased for a certain species, it does not include the hunting of any other species on the Ranch, unless the hunter agrees to pay the corresponding trophy fees for additional harvested game.
  • The hunting package is not transferable under any circumstances between the hunters in a group or to third parties.
  • It is COMPLETELY PROHIBITED to shoot at / harvest the following:
  • Does of ANY species, and
  • Domestic animals of any species.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. In the case that a hunter has already finished his hunt, or not, and at a given time wishes to try to hunt any other species, it will be permitted ONLY if he reaches an agreement with one of the Ranch’s representatives. Said agreement must be made BEFORE his intent to keep hunting. Be it understood that by “agreement” we mean the accord of the species to hunt, the price for the hunt, the number of trophies allowed to be harvested for the hunt and the date and method set for payment of the said hunt.

  2. ANY WOUNDED ANIMAL IS CONSIDERED A CONFIRMED KILL. Wounded means the drawing of blood, bone, flesh or hair from a game animal by any hunting method.

  3. Each hunter has the right to harvest ONLY one mature buck per person in the case of deer hunt packages. Additional trophy fees apply to additional taken deer.

  4. It is the hunters understanding that he is being offered a hunting opportunity and that we cannot guarantee hunts because we don’t have high fenced or enclosed areas and there are factors beyond our control that can affect the outcome of a hunt, for example extreme weather conditions and changes in animal behavior or movement patterns.
