Carmen Mountain Whitetail is a smaller subspecies of White-tailed deer endemic to the Sierra del Carmen Mountain Range and its adjacent mountain ranges and badlands like the Sierra del Burro Mountains in Old Mexico.
Safari Club International has just recognized the Carmen Mountain Deer as a "new separate trophy species" for the SCI Record Books. This is a great opportunity to be some of the first hunters to add this species to their trophy collections and have them recorded in the record books.
The Carmen Mountain Deer, distinctly in their own class, can be described as follows:
A "good" Carmen Mountain Deer will score between 80-85 SCI or B&C (gross) points,
An "exceptional" Carmen Mountain Deer will score between 85-99 SCI or B&C (gross) points and,
Any Carmen Mountain Deer over 100 SCI or B&C (gross) points is considered "World Class".
Mature Carmen Mountain Deer bucks usually sport racks with 3 to 4 points per side. Their average inside spread is around 10 inches, although it is not uncommon to see racks that have 12-13 inches of inside spread, with any rack sporting more than a 13 inch inside spread being considered primo.
These Carmen Mountain Deer are not commonly known for heavy or tall antlers, they are known to have antler bases around 2 ½ to 3 inches in circumference and gradually thin out towards the points. A mature buck will usually have main beams about 12-13 inches long and tines around 4 inches long on average, which is a particular characteristic of these Carmen Mountain Deer.
Carmen Mountain Deer have coats (brownish in summer and grayish in winter) that naturally blend into the background making them very efficient at disappearing into the brush and so more challenging for you to hunt. They have the same nervous demeanor that their Whitetail Deer cousins have, so when we do spot your trophy you have to be alert and ready. It is amazing to sometimes be watching one of these "desert ghosts" on a hillside, then all of a sudden you blink and they disappear!
