Nothing compares with British Columbia salmon fishing. Surrounded by waters teeming with several of the largest and hardest-fighting salmon species to be found, including Chinook and Coho salmon, British Columbia fishing resorts are among the world’s premier sport fishing destinations. And this lodge, found on Digby Island, is one of the best.
Chinook Salmon Fishing
These enormous game fish are often called by the nickname “king salmon,” and it isn’t hard to see why! The largest individuals of this species are the longest and heaviest in the world, rivaling even the Atlantic salmon—and you might find some real sea monsters here. In fact, the largest Chinook salmon ever caught was reeled in just a short distance south of this resort, in the Skeena River. If you’re looking to set down a new world record, this is the place to fish.
Most king salmon weigh 20-30 pounds and grow to about 28 inches long. They’re the first to come back from the open ocean and open up the May fishing season. They are renowned as hard fighters, and you won’t be disappointed by the fight when you get a Chinook on the line!
Coho Salmon Fishing
Coho salmon (aka silvers) put up a thrilling struggle, leaping into the air repeatedly when they’ve been hooked. They provide an especially spectacular experience for fly fishers. If you’re looking for a battle worthy of song and legend, these are the fish you want to go after.
Silvers average only seven pounds when they first appear in June, but continue to put on weight throughout the year. By the end of summer, it’s possible to catch Coho salmon that weigh in at up to 25 pounds. Despite the lighter weight, silvers are often just as long as Chinooks.
Pink Salmon Fishing
Pink salmon are small and light, usually growing to about 20 inches long and rarely weighing much more than five pounds. While they don’t make as spectacular a trophy as the others, they still put up an impressive fight and can be a lot of fun to bring in. They’re a great choice for younger fishers who don’t quite have the strength for the bigger species, and it’s always good to have at least one big one to round out your collection. They show up toward the end of June.
Chum Salmon Fishing
Chum salmon weigh about a dozen pounds and measure around 23 inches in length. They fight dramatically, leaping like a Coho between runs and dives. It’s often good to have someone with a camera on standby when fishing for chum salmon, as they should get plenty of dramatic shots as it leaps from the ocean.
Chum salmon show up at the same time as pink salmon, in late June.
Getting There
British Columbia fishing resorts can sometimes seem a bit difficult to get to, especially if they’re situated on an island, but this one is actually very easy to access. Digby Island is just a short trip across the harbor from the city of Prince Rupert, which you can reach by road or by air. Once you’ve reached the city, you’ll meet up with the resort staff, who will then take you and your group to the island. From there it’s an easy golf cart ride to the lodge.
Conditions
Many of the other great British Columbia salmon fishing destinations have a major drawback: being completely exposed to the elements. Inclement weather can often put a stop to fishing in these areas. However, in this archipelago of mountainous islands, there’s always some place that the wind can’t reach. Unless a dangerous storm rolls in, weather won’t force you to pack up for the day.
The Lodge
You’ll be staying in one of the best British Columbia fishing resorts around, with great food, a friendly staff, comfortable rooms, and a deck overlooking the water to relax on at the end of the night.
The Setting
This is a truly beautiful location. The island chain is full of wildlife—whales and dolphins in the water, wolves and bears on the land, and bald eagles in the sky. The islands are dramatic, and you can be looking down at a white sand beach one moment and up at a snow-covered mountain the next. This is a trip that you’ll always remember.
