Fly Fishing for Monster Sea Run Brown Trout
on the Rio Grande in Argentina.

Sea Run Brown Trout Fly Fishing in ArgentinaNear the Chilean and Argentine border, perched high on a bluff overlooking the upper Rio Grande is our destination for monster sea run brown trout. Established in 1997, this lodge accesses the river where the grade is steeper and long riffles transform into prime shadowed pools and undercut banks classic holding water for the massive Rio Grande sea run brown trout. This location serves the middle region of the world famous Rio Grande, covering over 10 ½ miles with access to both banks of the river. The lodge record is a 30-pound magnificent sea run brown. In a day of fishing on this river, it is normal to take multiple fish per angler, with an average weight of 11 pounds.

The water on this property has the characteristics of a smaller river. The wading here is easy with the river’s grade is still gentle. This creates a narrower river with more consistent current in the pools. Seasonally, anglers should come prepared with sinking and floating lines and expect to use each during the stay. Sea run trout are a mood-driven fish and in a day one may find themselves dredging the belly of pools in the morning for holding fish and later swinging leaches in the riffles to moving fish as the sun sets over the horizon.

On the Rio Grande water both spey and standard fly fishing rods work well. While many anglers are more comfortable throwing a “single” rod with heavy sinking lines, which works well here, the wind can always be a factor in Tierra del Fuego and for these days, a 12- to 14-ft, 8- or 9-weight two-handed Spey rod is an excellent choice for punching out line.

Anglers should note that even if they have never thrown a two-handed rod, we encourage you to give it a try. The learning curve is steep and many anglers will pick it up in a session or two. Additionally, the guides are excellent instructors and will have you on your way promptly. With the length of these rods and the power, anglers can throw an exceptional amount of line in virtually any conditions and easily mend the line which is key to the “down and across swing” method of fishing which is most productive in Tierra del Fuego.

Accommodations

The Lodge accommodates 6 anglers per week in single private bedrooms with en suite bath rooms complemented by a lodge Jacuzzi and dry sauna. The cathedral ceiling living room and dining room adjoin the protected Asado porch and open pit grill offering a view of the Rio Grande and the Andes Mountains which is second to none.

This lodge was constructed to focus on the privacy and comfort of the angler and to respect the unblemished characteristics of the surrounding landscape. Here, the culinary experience and fine wines are as unique and exclusive as the river before you. Be it a traditional Argentine Asado (a barbeque) with dulce de leche mousse for dessert or another culinary marvel from Argentina and around the globe, the professional staff will never cease to amaze you.
