Hunting Black Lechwe & Kafue Lechwe in Zambia

Regarding hunting Lechwe in Zambia, we can arrange a hunt for both species, but these are specialized hunts that are only quoted on request, so I will need to obtain a specific quote from our outfitter in Zambia for these hunt and it is doubtful that we can combine both species into a short, inexpensive seven day hunt.

As you probably know, the black Lechwe is only found in the vicinity of the Bangewelu swamp in northeastern Zambia, is a long way from Lusaka, and is primarily accessed by charter aircraft from Lusaka – which greatly increases the cost of the hunt unless the charter flight can be shared with other hunters traveling to/from the Bangewelu.  Sitatunga are also available in the Bangewelu but seven days is probably not an adequate amount of time for a reasonable opportunity at Sitatunga.  I believe that Oribi and Tsessebe are also available in the Bangewelu area.

Likewise, Kafue Lechwe are only found in the wild on the Kafue flats outside of Lusaka and typically can be hunted in one or two days either at the beginning or end of a safari to Zambia and arranging the hunt for Kafue Lechwe is not a problem.  I don’t have the exact figures in front of me, but believe that we are talking something on the order of US$6,250 for the Kafue Lechwe ($2,800 government concession fee, $2,250 trophy fee and approximately $1,200/day daily rate).  Most swamp hunts are for ten days and are considered by the Zambia government as a ”mini-safari”.  Fees for the black Lechwe would run around $16,950 for a ten day hunt not including the air charter, dip/pack, etc. ($2,800 government concession fee, $2,150 trophy fee for the black Lechwe, and approximately $1,200/day daily rate).  So you would be looking at somewhere around ten to twelve days and $23,200 for both species not including dip/pack, gratuities and any other incidental costs such as rifle permits, etc.

The current trophy fee on Sitatunga = $4,600, Oribi = $550 and Tsessebe = $2,050.

I will contact our outfitter in Zambia and see what we can do on a customized safari for Kafue and black Lechwe and get back to you with a more precise quotation – I will need to know when you are interested in going.

Thank you for contacting Global Sporting Safaris concerning your proposed hunt in Zambia.
