Who introduced the first Red Stag for hunting into Argentina?

July 31st, 2010

In 1907, the Red Stag was introduced into Argentina by Pedro Luro. Pedro was rich in La Pampa who dreamt about the positive results of introducing the majestic Red Stag to be hunted in Argentina. The breeder stags were brought in from France and later from Scotland and Germany. This first introduction was a tremendous success. Many years later, La Pampa became the first big game hunting destination in South America. Later, the red deer were also introduced in Northern Patagonia and recently into the Province of San Luis.

The Puma is the only big game animal that is native to Argentina than can be legally hunted but it can’t be exported into the United States at this time. The Wild boar has been in Argentina since the Spanish Conquerors arrived. All of the other game species such as Fallow deer, Axis deer, Blackbuck, Water Buffalo, Feral goats and Mouflon were introduced in the 40’s.
